Plant Source
The blueberry, scientifically known as *Vaccinium corymbosum*, belongs to the Ericaceae family. Due to its blue color and origin in the United States, it is commonly referred to as American blueberry. The fruit typically weighs between 0.5 to 2.5 grams, with a maximum weight of 5 grams. It is aesthetically pleasing with a beautiful blue hue and a fine white bloom. The fruit’s flesh is delicate, seeds are tiny, and it is 100% edible with a mild, fragrant, and sweet-tart taste, making it a premium fresh fruit.
In addition to being eaten fresh, blueberries have significant medicinal and nutritional benefits. The FAO lists it as one of the top five health foods. Blueberries are considered the finest among wild berries, with nutritional value surpassing that of apples, grapes, and oranges. They are known as the “King of Fruits” and have become a rapidly growing third-generation fruit variety known for its nutrition and health benefits, widely popular in Europe and America.
Plant Characteristics: Grapevines are large, climbing vines with bare or slightly downy young stems. The leaves are paper-like, round-ovate or round. The inflorescences are large and long, with very small, yellow-green cup-shaped calyxes. The flowers are short, conical, and the berries are oval to oval-shaped and turn purple-black or red with a bluish tint when ripe. Flowering occurs in June, and fruiting in September to October.
Distribution: Native to western Asia, grapes are cultivated worldwide, with approximately 95% of global production in the Northern Hemisphere. Major production areas in China include Xiaoxian in Anhui, Turpan and Hetian in Xinjiang, Yantai in Shandong, Zhangjiakou, Xuanhua, and Changli in Hebei, Dalian, Xiongxian, and Shenyang in Liaoning, and Lujiao Township, Minquan, and Yifeng in Henan.
Growing Conditions: Grapevines prefer warm, dry, and well-ventilated environments with plenty of sunlight. They have moderate cold tolerance and are not picky about soil types, thriving in loose, fertile sandy soil.
Major Value: Grapes are considered a precious fruit and are ranked among the world’s top four fruits. They are not only nutritious, versatile, beautiful, aromatic, and delicious but also suitable for fresh consumption or winemaking. Every part of the grape—fruit, root, and leaves—can be used for medicinal purposes.
