Cranberries, originally known as “crane berries,” are also called lingonberries, small red berries, or sour berries. They are evergreen shrubs in the Ericaceae family. Cranberries are small, round berries with bright red skin and flesh, and a tart yet slightly sweet flavor. They are high in water content, low in calories, and rich in fiber and minerals. Cranberries contain substantial amounts of vitamin C, pectin, and flavonoids, which are beneficial for skin health. Due to their low calorie content, cranberries are also considered health-promoting and can be consumed regularly. Fresh cranberries are hard to harvest and preserve, so they are often processed into cranberry chewables, cranberry vinegar, cranberry capsules, cranberry juice, and dried cranberries, offering significant economic value.

Plant Characteristics: Cranberries are small, evergreen shrubs in the Ericaceae family, with round or ovate leaves. The flowers are white or pale pink, bell-shaped, and the berries are spherical and reddish-purple. The plants are 5 to 20 cm tall, with trailing branches extending about 2 meters. They have oval leaves and deep pink flowers with bent petals and exposed stamens, resembling a crane, which is why they are sometimes called “crane berries.” The fruit is oval-shaped, 2 to 5 cm long, turning from white to deep red, with a tart, slightly sweet taste. Blooming occurs in September to October, and fruiting continues from November to August of the following year.

Distribution: Cranberries primarily grow in the cold northern hemisphere, limited to Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Maine, and Quebec in Canada, as well as Chile in South America and a small area in northeastern Europe. They are also common in the Daxing’anling region of China.

Growing Conditions: Cranberries prefer cool environments and have specific soil requirements, thriving in acidic soils.
